This is not about Paul Bowles, but I was thinking of you last night when I watched "Jane by Charlotte". Have you seen it . . . it's on Mubi. Don't have your email.

It's interesting . . . the conversation between daughter and mother. I like the way Charlotte listens . . . and I like the was Jane worries that Charlotte worries too much about her. The ghost of Kate, the ghost of Serge, and the unwelcome ghost of John Barry.

Yeah, John Barry is troublesome. I like his music a lot. And I do have a biography of him in my library, but I haven't read it yet. I can't comment on his relationship because I don't know his character that fully. But yeah, Jane lives a life.

Thanks Tosh, as you know I’m a big fan of Paul Bowles. His cultural reach is large, his music is wonderful and his books incredible. There’s also a book of collected letters that’s particularly interesting. They show a somewhat vulnerable side to him. I think it was Virgil Thomson who said about his autobiography “Without Stopping” should have been titled “Without Telling.”

Ha! Yes I heard that. His memoir is very un-telling. I think I have read his letters, but now not too sure. I need to track that book down.

Hi Tosh, Have you read "Without Stopping"? It gets into his music criticism and composition quite a bit, which I found particularly fascinating. He was one weird cold cat, I'll say that!

I’m pretty much a fan of all of his works. He’s pretty incredible.
