Interesting. I just spent 5 weeks alone in a canoe paddling down the Mississippi River. Although one thinks of it in terms of the great cities on its shores: St. Paul and Minneapolis, St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans, the vast majority of the river is, in fact, a desolate and wild place.

Most of the time, you are alone, on the water in solitude hour after hour. The "stillness of the environment" is intoxicating. Although I never sought to become nothing, the vastness of the landscape and the force of nature shrunk me as close to nothing as I think I could get - it was a baptism of solitude...

I shall never forget that feeling.

I've just read this book. It's a wonderful tapestry of death, philosophy and humour. More people should know about it.
